Sunrise - Ailsa Craig, Ontario
Sunrise - Ailsa Craig, Ontario
16" x 20", acrylic on stretched canvas, ready to hang, unframed - 2002
Artist Notes: I remember this moment very clearly. I was leaving to get to work in late November, it was sunrise, and out my kitchen window I saw this unusual scene of brown, black, orange, yellow, green and blue. The trees were in silhouette. I was late for work, as I got my sketch pad and drew the seen that was rapidly changing. I painted it that evening.
Sunset - Cheops, Egypt
Sunset - Cheops, Egypt
10" x 18", acrylic on stretched canvas, finished edges, ready to hang - 2007
Artist Notes: This seen was from a photograph of someone who travelled to Egypt. The sunset loomed large as these two Bedouins on their camels approached the foot of one of the Great Pyramids at Cheops. It was a warm scene of reds, oranges and yellows.
Saskatchewan Foothills
Saskatchewan Foothills
Acrylic on stretched canvas - 9" x 12" - unframed with finished edges ready to hang.
Artist's Notes: Canada's Prairie provinces are often thought of as boring and flat. But there are hills, and even some small mountain ranges. Here we see golden wheat fields - encircling an ancient boulder - overlooking greener pastures and distant foothills.
Halfway Up - Rock Climber
Halfway Up - Rock Climber
16" x 20", acrylic on stretched canvas, finished edges, ready to hang - 2010
Artist Notes: My inspiration for this canvas was a fellow rock climbing and a rock flower pot shape rising out of a rocky shoreline by the sea. The man is halfway up in a red shirt. Birds circle the summit, and loose rocks circle the base. We do hope he is successful and makes it to the top. How he makes it down, your guess is as good as mine!
Woman Walking In Waves - Pt. Franks, Ontario
Woman Walking In Waves - Pt. Franks, Ontario
16" x 20", acrylic on stretched canvas, finished edges, ready to hang - 2004
Artist Notes: Lake Huron is as large as an inland sea. It is a huge fresh water lake with sandy beaches encircling its hundreds of miles of shoreline. In the middle it plunges to nearly 600-feet deep. Here is a beach on the Canadian side, south of Grand Bend's famous beaches and south of The Pinery. This place is Port Franks and the beaches are the finest on the Canadian side, and not made for huge numbers of tourists. And that's hoe this woman likes it: Clean fine sand, shallow warm waters, and fresh breezes with clouds scudding across the sky on a hot summer's day.
Man On Sand Dune - Morocco - 2009
Man On Sand Dune - Morocco - 2009
16" x 20", acrylic on stretched canvas, finished edges, ready to hang - 2009
Artist Notes: "Which way now?" seems to be what this fellow has on his mind. He stands on a stretch of sand dune and considers his options, Tilley hat keeping his brain cool as he stares out at the desert expanse. Head in the wrong direction and you will become lost and die of thirst! It is like many points in our lives - think clearly and make the best decision.
I particularly liked the contrast between the sunny and the dark sides of the dune, which snakes serpent-like before out decision-maker, as it did when Adam was in the Garden of Eden.
Carleton University From Dow's Lake, Ottawa
Carleton University From Dow's Lake, Ottawa
12" x 16", acrylic on canvas board, unframed - 1990
Artist Notes: This scene was painted "en pleine aire". I sat on a bench in the park next to Ottawa's Dows Lake and struggled to work quickly as the sun set and all the light and shadows shifted on me. Passers-by stopped to watch and discuss what I was up to as insects got stuck in the paint!
Dow's Lake, Ottawa, At Sunset
Dow's Lake, Ottawa, At Sunset
12" x 16", acrylic on canvas board, unframed - 1990
Artist Notes: This canvas was a second try at the scene at Dows Lake, this time in a more Group of Seven style, with trees rendered as shapes of colour sans detail. I chose to recompose this from the original painting I did and exclude the university office tower and focus instead on the sea wall and lights, along with the reflections.
Relief! ~ Outhouse, Upper Canada Village, Morrisburg, Ontario
Relief! ~ Outhouse, Upper Canada Village, Morrisburg, Ontario
8" x 12", acrylic on canvas board, framed - 1990
Artist Notes: I recall this moment in 1990. I was on a tour of Upper Canada Pioneer Village, with all its wonderful assortment of historical buildings. We all seemed to connect with the Out House, set against the fence with trees growing up around it, in a meadow of wildflowers.
Spring Wheat With Birds On A Wire
Spring Wheat With Birds On A Wire
8" x 12", acrylic on canvas board, framed - 1990
Artist Notes: The idea here was to focus on the gold versus blue colours of the wheatfield and the sky. The telephone line is one of the few man-made things seen in the farming areas of Ontario, and they often have a gaggle of some sort of blackbirds sitting atop of them, discussing life.
English Cottage With Thatched Roof
English Cottage With Thatched Roof
16" x 20", acrylic on canvas board, framed - 2006 SOLD
Artist Notes: The Subject of this canvas was a thatched roof cottage in Sussex, in southern England. Thatched roofs were very common for centuries and are a beauty to behold. They do need maintenance. This cottage was complete with the double diamond chimneys and the diamond-shaped leaded windows, not to mention a lovely English garden.
